An ethnic outfit is incomplete without a fine piece of jewelry.  Gold, silver or brass are the metals most commonly used for making jewelry along with precious and semi-precious stones. The motifs or designs used in Indian jewelry are very detailed and have cultural significance. Here are some  popular motifs used for crafting Indian jewelry.

 

The peacock motif :

Peacocks are omnipresent in both traditional saris and jewelry. The peacock symbolizes love and prosperity in Indian art and its feathers symbolize immortality and immunity to evil. 

 

 

The fish motif : 

The fish symbolizes the power of water and the origin of life. A pair of fish represents good fortune, salvation & fertility. The fish motif is not as common as the other motifs but are becoming popular these days especially for jewelry.

 

 

The lotus motif : 

Floral motifs are the most favorite among all the motifs in Indian jewelry, especially the lotus. The lotus is the symbol of purity, abundance, virtue and happiness. 

 

 

Goddess Lakshmi motif :

Indian jewelry often uses motifs based on gods and goddesses but the goddess Lakshmi is the most popular among them. The goddess of prosperity, Lakshmi, is often used in jhumkas, harams, bangles and necklaces.

 

 

The mango motif :

The mango or paisley motif is also a common motif used in Indian jewelry. The paisley has historic and cultural significance and is often used in harams along with semi-precious stones.
